Apple’s latest macOS 12 Monterey beta has outed a new High Power mode that isn’t available on any current Mac, but could debut in a future model.
The new High Power mode was first spotted in the macOS Monterey beta 8 release by the folks at 9to5Mac, and it appears to be the opposite of the lower Power mode that already exists on some Macs.
9to5Mac has now found references to a new “High Power Mode” added to macOS Monterey beta 8, which was released to developers earlier today. While “Low Power Mode” already exists and reduces the performance of Mac laptops to save battery life, “High Power Mode” is expected to do the opposite by letting users run apps at full performance even when the Mac is not connected to the power.
The feature isn’t yet one that anyone can make use of, so it’s possible it will be a feature of a future Mac.
Whenever it arrives, it’s likely the feature will be enabled when users need extra horsepower from their machines when carrying out intensive tasks like editing video or running builds in Xcode.
Apple is expected to ship macOS Monterey within the next few weeks, while new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook pro models are also expected to be announced around the same time.
